Lecture 1 : Introduction/ Briefing
30/3/2021 // Week 1:
Today we met our two lecturers Mr.Vinod and Mr. Shamsul
At the beginning Mr. Vinod briefed us about the modules information, modules outcomes, booklet and also he explained how to create our E-portfolio step by step and also he explained for us how to upload and create contents to the blog i watched the videos and it was very helpful
We were given a brief run through of our module , and he explained every part in the Facebook page
Announcement section, Files and Popular topics discussed he made us familiar with the facebook page and how to get any kind of information through it.
Also he told us that we easily fail if we don't do our e-portfolio or submitted our work so thats why here I am so, i decided to take notes during the class so i have to write down everything here im trying my best to catch up with everything trying to achieve highest grade in this subject.
There are some important notes Mr.Vinod mentioned during the class;
- We have to write the feedback that i got on my work in Excel Sheet and E-portfolio as well
- Watch youtube lectures and complete them by week 5
- Take good look to E-portfolios samples on facebook
- Take a look about how to write reflection
- Download 10 type faces & install them into illustrator
He also introduced us to the purpose of E-portfolio and he break down it into 5 main parts should be included in each and every E-portfolio
- Lecture
- Instructions
- Feedback
- Reflections
- Further reading
I will write down what he mentioned about each of them for the future reference to check on them later on.
Lecture : Summary of lecture every week
Instructions : The PDF Module booklet
Feedbacks: Specific and direct feedback given verbaly to me about my work in the exercise section and also general feedback should we should write them accurate and to post them in excel sheet & E-portfolio
Reflections: Accumulated over the week .
How was the experience of the task, it has 3 parts (Experience , Observation, Findings)
Further Reading: Need to finish 3 different readings books to E-portfolio for the 14 weeks.
Also Mr.Vinod taught us about Permalink to check our files is it visible or not.
Importing an image: Should have label , description and date
Lecture 2 : Digitalising
So on our Second week , Mr. Vinod distributed us small groups so we can evaluate each other's work Mr.Vinod sent us a questions so based on these questions we answer about each other process
We evaluated base on the sufficiency of design so the word should have the meaning without any puting any visual effects, so we discussed how can the work be improved and we rated each other work so it was very fun.
Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul discussed with us about illustrator and how to create the design for the word and how to play with the word for nice outcome .
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul made some designs in front of us during the class to teach us.
Lecture 3 : Animating one word
Our Third week , It was very interesting session , i really learned a lot and laughed a lot
Mr Vinod distributed us into small groups so we can evaluate each others work Digitally , So i received the feedback from my friends and from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul as well , so i worked on them to do some modifications from the feedback i got .
So basically I took down some notes in order to improve my designs and the feedback was really helpful for me it helped me to improve my designs and to create new designs .
During this session , Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul explained for us how to animate Letter "O"
and we did it during the class in order to practice as well .
I took some notes to help me to animate the word.
Lecture 4 : Text Formatting
Our Fourth Week , Both lecturers Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul they gave us feedbacks about our animated GIFs about improvising , they also checked our e-portfolio blogs to be aware of our process how it goes and if we 're on the right path or not .
During week 4 Mr.Vinod introduced to us the next part that is text formatting of Task 1 exercise and its elaborated by Mr. Vinod .
Lecture 5 : Continuing text formatting
30/4/2021 // Week 5:
Our Fifth week , Mr Vinod continued discussing about text formatting based on our work and layout that have been conducted to us through the videos , he gave a feedback to each one of us , and what mistakes have been done to improve the work .
He gave us some questions for discussion with our peers to ask to each other to ensure that the work done correctly during the feedback session.
On the same lecture he also briefed for us about task 2.
Pre-recorded Lectures
TYPO_0_INTRODUCTION
Typo is a subject in a module is a fundamental aspect in any design studies discipline
It develops attributes that are fundamental to any discipline
And other aspects that involve design discipline, animation , graphic design , new media
The skills set that you develop here in this module is applicable to all
Its basically fundamental skill set , that’s why its taught In the first semester
It allows you to develop features of yourself and attributes and characteristics in yourself that will sserve you in good stead in the other modules and also in our life as designers.
Typo: it’s not difficult because its difficult subject the reason behind that the the we tend to be visually tuned to produce visual work and also to express ourselves visually
Its gets some time to getting used to it its visual phenomenal as well.
He highlighted that you will see it when you go about your day to day routine you will see it in a new light , because of the challenges that you will face during the course
What is typo ? :
could be deemed the act of creating letters creatintion of tyoe faces or type families.
Also animation animatic forms like movie titles ..
Visible and prevent in website designs , "You have to have good sense of typography to produce good websites"
Another place seen , is in the app designs and this requires typographical skills
Signage design , it helps and navigates you or it diesnt and is it effective or not all of that in part of the skill levels in typo
Also in bottle labels , books and posters , also in real life .
Not just the text you see but the attributes and characteristics and skils sets and thinking developed from typography
Also in logo types .. the senisitivity in the logo type takes very skillful level in typography.
- Typography is worth 500 years of knowledge.
- Typo has evolved over 500 years
- From calligraphy, lettering, then to Typography, and like any craft that has been developed over time it employs a number of termonoligies , conventions and unwritten rules depending on ypur disposition or influences with regard the style
- Typography is applied almost everywhere
- Typography plays an essential part in our daily lives it can be seen even in real life and everywhere
Calligraphy is basically writing styles , black letter unnsealed , round hand and few styles
Lettering draw the Letters out.
Before computers people used to hand letter headlines or hand letter signs but now a days we just type it out on our computers and print it out .
Terminologies are basically like all disciplines we have terminologies things we refer to that may not be normal speak for normal people .
Conventions are unwritten rules , but they are important rules .
What does lettering means ? simply it means drawing out circumferences of letters while Calligraphy goes more to writing styles .
“ Typo is an art “
“ Processes for developing good art “
People say break rules . no rules , You cant run before you learn to walk .
Learn the conventions understand the rules before you learn to break them.
Mr.Vinod not sugeesting breaking the rules before learning , it takes time trial errors to understand what good or bad
He also mentioned you have to get used for criticism and feedbacks learning is never easy it takes time to develop .
'To be great animator you have to understand typo'
Black letter calligraphy , also called Gothic script or Old English script, in calligraphy, a style of alphabet that was used for manuscript books and documents throughout Europe—especially in German-speaking countries—from the end of the 12th century to the 20th century.
Informal calligraphy you're writing revealed your education background and your class level.

What typography is defined ?
Oxforddicitionaries.com;
suggest , (it’s the style and appearance of printed)
Wikipedia.com;
- is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing (leading), and letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning[1]). The term typography is also applied to the style, arrangement, and appearance of the letters, numbers, and symbols created by the process.
- Presenting information
Who practice typography ?
- Typesetters
- Compositors
- Typographers
- Graphic designers
- Art directions manga artists
- Comic book artists
- Graffiti artists
Typography is now something everybody does.
If you want different level of comprehension then good typographers are necessary.
Mr Vinod said that bad typography affects across the board right bad typography affects. comprehension learning ,he said also it’s a responsibility designers must understands .
Presenting information
- Typography means - appearance, style, and arrangement of the letters or even numbers, and symbols and etc. which is created by the process.
- Font means - refers to the individual font or weight within the typeface. (Georgia Regular, Georgia Italic, Georgia Bold) , it comes from a French word , which refers to the term foundry which is a place that caasts basically metal so it has historical origins in terms of the name
- Typeface means - its the entire family of fonts that share similar styles or characteristics For example (Georgia, Arial, Times New Roman)
within those type faces they maybe fonts of different weights or styles
left these fonts on the right different fonts within type face.
 |
| Figure 2: Georgia Type Face |
Georgia & Helvetica , Comic sans , Baskerville , etc are different type faces
 |
| Figure 3: Different typefaces |
To be a better designer first of all you have to understand the rules , because art takes time a lot of trials and many criticism its like a push to be improved and to be a good designer as well. You have to accept other's feedback about your work and this is the hardest part .
TYPO_1_DEVELOPMENT
Development
Early latterform development : Phoenician to Roman
The biggest influence on the type of writing created , The tool that you hold in your hand has a very important influence on the type For example the scripts were developed on the idea of crafting , tools , etc.

Timeline
Humanist script to (roman type) to (Venetian type from 1500) to (The Golden Age of Printing) to (Dutch printing) to (English type from the eighteen century) to (Baskerville's innovations)
Text type classification
- Blackletter - forms based upon the hand-copying styles (Cloister Black. Goudy Text)
- Old style - based upon lowercase forms for book copying (Bembo, Caslon)
- Italic - echoes contemporary Italian handwriting
- Script - not entirely appropriate in lengthy text settings, must not use in all capital letters (Mistral)
- Transitional - refinement of old-style forms (Baskerville, Time Roman)
- Modern - further rationalisation of old-style letterforms, serifs unbracketed, contrast between thick and thin strokes (Bell, Bodoni)
- Square Serif/Slab Serif - little variation between thick and thin strokes (Serifa, Rockwell)
- Sans Serif - serifs eliminated altogether (Futura, Helvetica)
- Serif/Sans Serif - semi sans/ semi serif - skirt the boundaries in between (Rotis, Stone)
TYPO_2_BASIC
Typography basics
A letterform's component parts make it much easier to identify specific typefaces.
Mr. Vinod explained how to describe letterforms by knowing their parts, apex/vertex, etc.
To work successfully with type, make sure to work with full font and know how to use it. Always select a type family that has a good range of typefaces.
 |
| Figure 9: Definitions of baseline, median and X-height |
1. Baseline - The imaginary line the visual base of the letterforms.
2. Median - The imaginary line defining the x-height of letterforms.
3. X-height - The height in any typeface of the lowercase 'x'.
4. Ascender - The portion of the stem of a lowercase letterform that project above the medium line.
5. Descender - The portion of the stem of a lowercase letterform that projects below the baseline.
Fonts:
1. Uppercase
Capital letters, including certain accented vowels, the c cedilla and n tilde, and the a/e and o/e ligatures. (e.g. A, B, C)
2. Lowercase
Lowercase letters include the same characters as uppercase. (e.g. a, b, c)
3. Small Capitals
Uppearces letterforms draw to the x-height of the typefaces. Small Caps are primarily found in serif fonts as part of what is often called expert set.
4. Italic - Most fonts today are produced with a matching italic. Small caps, however, are alsmot always only roman.
5. Punctuation, miscellaneous characters - important to know all the characters available in a typeface before choosing the appropriate type for a particular job6. Ornaments
Used as flourishes in invitations or certificates. They usually are provided as a font in larger typeface family. Only a few traditional or classical typeface used as flourishes in invitations or certificates
7. Italic - Most fonts today are produced with a matching italic. Small caps, however, are alsmot always only roman.

Tracking/Kerning/Letter spacing
Kerning - automatic adjustment of space between letters
Letter spacing - to add space between letters
Tracking - addition and removal of space in a word or sentence
 |
| Figure 1: Kerning |

Letter spacing reduces readability, therefore it is not encouraged to letterspace words or sentences.
Formatting Text
- Justified -gives effect of a symmetrical shape on the text
Centered - gives effect of symmetry upon the text
Flush left - closely mirrors the asymmetrical experience of handwriting
Flush right - places emphasis on the end of a line as opposed to its start, useful in situations like captions
Leading and line length
- Goal in setting text type is to allow for easy, prolonged reading.
- Line Length - keep line length between 55-65 characters (number of letters in one sentence)
Type size - text type should be large enough to be read easily
Leading - text set too tightly causes vertical eye movement, type set too loosely distract the reader from the reading due to creation of stripped pattern
Texture
- Consider different textures of typefaces. Some typefaces are designed for screen reading, some are not
Type specimen book
- We can only determine our choice when the final version is to be read on screen. This is to provide accurate reference for type, type size, type leading, type line length.
How to indicate a paragraph ?
- Leading should be same as paragraph spacing value to maintain cross alignment.
- Line space between paragraphs.
- The pilcrow symbol (¶) was used to indicate paragraphs.
- Use same size of the line spacing or the same as the point size of the text.
 |
Figure 5: Line space vs Leading
|
Widows and orphans should be avoided , the solution to widows is to re-break line endings throughout paragraph
Kerning to adjust raggedness should be minimum or maximum 3 clicks only not more than that.
 |
Figure 6: Widow vs Orphan
|
Highlighting Text
- "Quotation marks"
- Italics
- Creating a box around the text
- Bold
- Change the typeface and make it bold
- Change the colour of text
Cross Alignment
Cross aligning reinforces architectural sense of the page while articulating complimentary vertical rhythms.
Headline within Text
A head - indicates clear break between topics within a section
B head - subordinate to A heads, indicate a new supporting argument
C head - highlights specific facets of material within B head text

TYPO_6_SCREEN&PRINT
- Pixel Differential Between Devices
- Print Type Vs Screen Type
- Different Medium
- Hyperactive Link/Hyperlink
- Static Vs Motion
- System Fonts for Screen/ Web Safe Fonts
Pixel Differential Between Devices
It depends on the device because there will be a lot of variation due to different number of pixels.
Print Type Vs Screen Type
The designer ensures that text is flowing and smooth and easy to read using common types like Caslon, Garamond, They are highly readable when set at small font sizes.
Different Medium
Typography can exist in any shapes or any form, the well skilled designer and typesetters will be having good result of easy readable text.
Hyperactive limk/Hyperlink
Font Size for screen - 16 pixels on most screens for at least 12 points to read text.
Static Vs Motion
Static may have minimal characteristics in expressing words.
System Fonts For Screen/ Web safe fonts
Open Arial, Sans, Times New Roman, are examples of web safe fonts.

Task 1: Exercise - Type Expression
Week 1- Sketching
For exercise one we asked to choose any 4 words from the following 7 words : (Slice, Punch, Spin, Wave, Scream, Eat and Point) that posted in the facebook group, so for week one we asked to sketch out the 4 words with different ideas but visual cues are not allowed as in the brief video towards the ends .
the words that i chose for type expression are ( Point, Wave, Slice, Spin, Eat and Punch ). Spin and Punch are extra two words.
Actually those are my sketches for first time , then i realised that i have mistakes within my sketches based on the feedback from the lecturer and my colleagues so i decided to have some modifications
 |
Figure 1: First Sketches (05/04/2021)
|
So After i got the feedback about my work i decided to make some modifications accordingly and i reduced the visual effects in my designs and also tried to improve all of my designs so came up with another sketches with modifications,
I chose words (Scream, Spin, Slice, Wave ) and Punch as extra word

Task 1: Exercise - Type Expression
Week 2- Digitalising
During our week 2 class Mr.Vinod asked us to Digitalise one design from each word from the 4 words so total designs should be 4 designs .
 |
Figure 6: Progress while digitalising (10/4/2021)
|
I did not follow the words typically when it came to digitalising out of sudden another better idea pop up to your mind that what Mr Vinod said . so when I came to digitalising my sketches I had better ideas for other words.

After feedback I got from Mr. Vinod, I found that scream can be further improved by making letter S normal standing, I was instructed to recreate Spin as well as i added word Point as better idea came into my mind suddenly.
So I tried more than 1 idea for spin word to have more varieties .

Week 3- Animating
During this week we were taught how to animate using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop for creating GIF. so we constructed and taught how to animate during class.
Task for this week was to animate any one of our words to explain the type expression more. I decided to go with Scream, Spin, Point.
My first animation turned out to be not revolving correctly.

Figure 14: GIF first trial of the spin word animation (16/4/2021) ,comprising of 14 Frames
This was my first trial for spin word but as it in the GIF it doesn't revolve effectively so i tried to make it more interesting but it doesn't work , so i decided to watch more tutorials to improve myself more and more , This video from whatsapp because i lost photoshop so i lost the file as well .
I used 14 art boards in this animation word.

Task 1: Exercise - Formatting Text
Week 4
In this week we were asked by Mr Vinod to watch on Youtube play lest all 4 text formatting videos for this week to be familiar with using Adobe InDesign, and creating layouts. For the first task "I am Helvetica", I learned how to letter space words and kern as well and what is kern means and how to apply it , like mentioned in the videos they're so helpful.

|
 |
| Figure 31: example of presence and absence of kerning of letters A,V and W,A |
 |
| Figure 32: types of kerning of letters A,W, E |
|
We were asked to use the 10 type families provided by Mr Vinod through facebook group to make some different variation to our names with appliance understanding of kerning and letter spacing.

|
For the Second Part text formatting video , We have learnt how to use the font size based on line length,Average ( 55-65 characters max) , on the other hand paragraph spacing &leading.
 |
Figure 35: Checking number of character per line of the text 62 (27/4/2021)
|
Fourth video is talking mainly about adjusting the raggedness Mr. Vinod said it doesn't have to be very accurate it can be lines shorter than the other it okay, and also discussed about meaning of cross alignment in the third and fourth video.
 |
Figure 36: Process cross columns are cross aligned with baseline grid (27/4/2021)
|
So I started my first attempt layout following the steps in the video of Mr Vinod's explaining it , with taking some notes .

After the Feedback that I got from Mr.Vinod I realized that my article has many problems , so I took down notes to re-create another article with some improvements.
In the first article i chose Universe LT STD Font, Size 12 pt.
At this week , after further discussion with my peers I discovered that I did some mistakes so I decided to redo the assignment after writing down the notes to take them in consideration and to produce better work.

I created another layout after the improvements Mr. Vinod suggested to me ,
For my final submission .
- I used Universe LTD STD font.
- Size 9 pt & leading 11 pt which is 9+2= 11 which is 2 points more .
- Character average 60-62.
- Tracking for line 5 and not more than 3 times as advised .
- Margins 30 from top , 3 for the rest

Week 5
This week mainly for feedbacks from our peers , i got some feedbacks and some improvements and already did it in my final submission as instructed by sir Shamsul
FEEDBACK
Week 1
General Feedback: Don't use any kind of visual effects to express the word
Specific Feedback: your expression are presently basic, but acceptable, except for Point. There doesn’t seem to be any expression of an idea that represents the meaning of the word.
Week 2
General Feedback: We should know how to evaluate our own work and our peers work by ourselves , Don't Screenshot our work we should Export it as PDF or JPG
Specific Feedback: My peers suggested to make letter S vertical instead of horizontal in word scream, also Mr Vinod suggest to re modify word slice because it's not reflecting the meaning very well .
For word Punch he suggested to make it in the centre of the box all margins shhould be equal.
And for spin trying to think for better idea, So I changed the whole idea with 3 more ideas and he chose one of them.
Week 3
General Feedback: Ideas are okay , Try to watch more youtube tutorials to advance yourself, each word express the meaning.
Specific Feedback: Word Spin that lecturer chose, it describes the movement in the GIF also it is straight to the point and simple .
General Feedback: To submit spin word that I did seventh trial , lecturer didn't like fifth attempt the advanced one or the other ideas so i have to stick with that.
Specific Feedback: To stick with that seventh attempt, i suggested to change background but Mr Vinod told me not necessary to do extra effort and to proceed with the next assignment.
General Feedback: Point size issues , improvise with the comments given.
Specific Feedback: Un justify text , check ragging , point size and number of characters in one line.
Week 6
General Feedback: Layout is good , ragging very smooth , leading is okay
Specific Feedback: Remove the "Describe 350 word sentance"
REFLECTIONS
Week 1
Experience
First of all this is my First week for typography class I took this module in my foundation year but it was very basic than this module but this module is very detail and to be honest when I came into this degree, I really had no idea what typography means, Even the illustrator i had no idea about it because in my foundation everything was manually so It was very hard and new to me
I am trying my best to understand the subject as much as I can by taking down notes and by watching all the materials which were very helpful for me.
also,I am trying to catch up with everything by asking the lecturers and i seemed that i'm annoying but i'm trying my best because this module is extremely new to me
sometimes it was very hard to watch all the videos at one time because i have a lot of for other subjects maybe if the class was face to face it will be much easier .
but I'm really learning a lot from this module .
Im in the process to learn how to use illustrator I am not very familiar with them because this is my first time using it .
Observation
I noticed that this subject is really interesting at the same time its easy but hard at the same time , but its doable it has many details but i like the idea of developing the idea, there's another point that this module can easily pile up if not updated week by week because it has a lot of details .
Findings
Mr Vinod always share with us exercises for back pain and to be more energetic and to feel less sleepy because my class here 2am .
The best part is that he gave us short and sometimes long breaks.
Week 2
Experience
This is the most confusing thing this is the first time to digitalise anything so i was like very stressed and i always feel like i'm lost .
I have never used illustrator before but at the end of the day im so happy that i did such a GIF
I followed the instructions of course without those instructions I would be stuck there till now.
Observation
I observed that you have to take a lot of inspirations to be more creative and to have more than 1 reference and you have to develop yourself by yourself by watching a lot of tutorials with more techniques
Findings
Time management is the most imporortant thing in this module and never ever miss any class.
Not to leave any work till the end of the week you gonna be lost
Experience
First time to get feedback about my work on digital so at this point before you getting the feedback you see your design something and after the feedback you see another something totally different it like your thinking gonna be widen .
Observation
The feedback is really is the most important part , your thinking gonna be widen you gonna think with very different perspective to be honest criticism of your work not that easy but it helps you to develop more your ideas and to squeeze your mind for better idea .
Findings
I found that its not necessary to follow your sketches exactly when it comes to digitalising its totally different unexpected idea pop out of sudden and it's most of the time better than what you have sketched.
Week 4
For me its the most challenging week because my animation wasn't that good , i faced a lot of problems while animating and especially while revolving the spin word so i have to develop myself as my peers before the next class so i watched a lot of videos trying to develop my ideas more to be honest the feedback encouraged me a lot to develop myself more and more.
Observation
I observed that most of the time i forgot to save my work so by this mistake it makes the work doubled and overloaded , I also noticed that i forgot to take screenshots of my progress.
Findings
Its really important to watch the pre-recorded lectures before MR. VINOD'S class it helps during the class it's not the very first time to hear that kind of information so the possibility of being lost during the class is less , it also gives you a chance to ask more important questions.
Week 5
Experience
Revealing the mathematical skills session , I hate Maths me and numbers are not friends by any mean so this week super confusing for that kind of people like me .
At that week Mr Vinod taught us about font size . leading , raging and so on.
It was my first time to use Indesign as well but it was interesting despite the mathematical part.
Observation
I observed a very beautiful and interesting work from my peers work at that point my inspiration was my peers work so interesting !!
Findings
I found that i have very creative peers , i really liked their work and that encouraged me to be more creative and to have good outcome as my evaluation to my own work.

This book is for anyone who is interested in giving words impact, who loves words and how they influence us
While reading this book I have noticed that the author is trying to illustrate
the science and the art behind how fonts influence you. It explains why certain fonts or styles evoke particular experiences and associations. Fonts have different personalities that can create trust, mistrust, give you confidence, make things seem easier to do or make a product taste better. They’re hidden in plain sight, they trigger memories, associations and multisensory experiences in your imagination.
I am going to state the learning outcomes from the book in bullet points:
* Fonts can alter the meanings of words right before your very eyes.
* See what personalities fonts have, and what they reveal about YOUR personality.
* Explore how you respond to fonts emotionally and can make fonts work for your message.
* Be amazed that a font has the power to alter the taste of your food.
To conclude, I've read a lot of books about fonts, but most of them don't spend a lot of time discussing why particular fonts evoke particular feelings or responses. This book fills that gap. With lots of research-based information about the hows and whys of readability, emotional response, and design, this book is a useful addition to any designer or typographer's bookshelf. Nevertheless, its was Quick and easy read! I really enjoyed how the author explored the history behind the typeface we are now so familiar with. The guides on lines and endings and their perception was pretty useful so that was cool

Jessica gave many examples of varying styles and ways to embellish the lettering designs . She even shows her process for vectoring lettering and takes us through step by step, covering terminology and giving tips and tricks.
The second half of the book shows her final projects alongside the sketches for the work. It’s impossible to not sit and admire the preciseness of her sketches and lettering, and to see the work from the beginning to end is a real treat.
This book benefits both beginners and professinals. The beginners will enrich thier minds with the knowledge shared in this book. While, professionals will enjoy the beauty of the photos of the designs available in the book
