Today's Lecture is about Visual Analysis.
What is Visual Analysis means ?
Visual analysis is a method of understanding art that focuses on an artwork’s visual elements, like
line, texture, scale and colour
the purpose of visual analysis can also recognize the choices that an artist made in creating the artwork, on the other hand its better to r understand how the formal properties of an artwork communicate ideas, content, or meaning.
Simply it's about understanding a piece of work by focusing on the Visual elements and principles of it.
In other way its analysis of the visual composition of the picture in order to explain how the artist put the images together to create meaning throughout this artwork.
Visual analysis is all about how the designer delivers the meaning , content or even ideas of the design that he did to the viewers.
The main purpose of using the visual analysis is to recognise and understand the visual choices the artist made in creating the artwork and what the artist intended to convey.
Visual analysis helps people to understand visual advertising for example or the adverts that included in the newspaper or the magazines so this helps in interpreting advertisements seen around us.
There are Three phases of Visual Analysis:
- Phase One - Observation: means to observe or closely looking for identifying the visual elements such as colour , line and space of the design for example the red colour means emergency or blood or danger; green means safe and close to nature; and blue means cool and relaxed . So its all about trying to describe them accurately in your own words. So for the observation its all about looking , observing , thinking and finding your own way with good language to communicate what is identified without reading anything about the work.
- Phase Two - Analysis: Is to think about what your observations that you identified and to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations, like the details on the specific visual elements you have identified and how they combined together to create a whole story, and what effect that whole has on the viewer as well.
- Phase Three - Interpretation: This is the final stage , Its all balancing observations, description, and analysis with facts about the artist and design work and its historical context.

Final Project: Visual Analysis
So we're asked for our final project to pick an artwork inspires us and to complete the 3 phases of visual analysis based on the selected design.
So we have to do some research and idea exploration before delving into developing an idea for the chosen design and to write visual analysis, research, idea exploration, idea development, final idea, rationale.

I decided to choose "Black Lives Matter", As im so sympathetic with this problem and I hope to be solved till the end of this world So I went through Pinterest to choose the best design I liked

Feedback
During the consultations with Miss Maria I shared my detailed visual analysis with Miss Maria, and actually she gave me the approval to proceed with the design that I did , actually she followed me step by step during this Final Project , She just suggested small edits to do within the design like to add more something related to BLM and I already mentioned everything within the PDF above , Im really very happy and satisfied and honoured by the feedback I got on my design and finally I'm done !
Reflection
So my reflection for this project it really helped me to gain more knowledge and to go through very small details into the design principles module, During the analysis part at the begging I didn't know how to do this part so I do some research and I read a lot of articles explaining how to do this process and also Miss Maria made it very smooth for me by explaining many times to me and she usually respond on time on Telegram , so this made the process faster & easy and I of course listened to Miss Jinchi's recorded session and she broke down everything so it made the process easier as well , and the recording is there whenever I struggle with anything I go back to the pre recorded session.
Also because of this project I want deeper to design principles as I read couple of articles papers about how to analyse design and I learned a lot about it for example I will share some knowledge that I gained , I learned about Composition , Elements of Design , Focal Point , Color , Line, Texture, Shape , Form , Value and Size .. etc
So it was very helpful for me to understand more.
Final Reflection
1. What have i learnt in this module?
Throughout these 14 weeks , I've really gained a lot of extra knowledge on design elements and principles , As I had the similar module during my foundation year in the previous university so It helped me to have the basics of the design principles in general , But we didn't go through all of those details as this module . So what I have learnt is that now when I look to any design now I have different prespective than before , now I can understand the message through the design and what is the purpose of the colours used and so on , So now Im confident enough while doing any design than before . For each and every exercise and project we went through there was something new to learn for example the balance how to achieve balance in artwork this is something I learned throughout this module I didn't learn before , we also learned about visual hierarchy its really something very important to understand as designer I didn't know something like that before , I learned about the lines,shapes, spaces, colours and texture not only that I learned also about as I mentioned before about the 8 principles which they are balance, movement, proportion/scale, alignment, contrast, emphasis, repetition and unity .
Throughout this module I learned about how to create a good composition , I made a lot of trials , errors and effort that's how I learned in this module.
To be honest for each and every project in this module there are benefits and experience I gained especially for the symbol exercise I didn't imagine that I can create a new sign , and also for the final project as its process includes part of research on design principles and theories and articles so this helped me in gaining knowledge .
Also for colouring part watercolours / poster colours I really learned about different techniques and tricks I didn't learn before and I really did a lot of trials and errors as seen within my blog despite I ruined a lot of artworks I really learned without those trials I wouldn't learn anything.
2. What did i enjoy the most?
To be honest this is the smoothest and the most interesting subject this semester.
The most enjoying part is that each week we use different materials , this was very interesting as I really like to go to the stationeries to buy new materials.
As its was the only subject that I can use my hands not necessary to make everything on digital and I really like drawing and colouring so it was way easier than I really enjoyed this subject very much despite my medical condition and all of that Miss Maria was supper supportive and very friendly and she appreciated each and every effort that I made and she's usually there whenever I need to understand something or anything we usually met on teams and also considered the difference time zone she , She's the reasons that I continued this semester with great progress .
Ms Maria Always contacting me because she knows my health condition and she gave me extra time to submit the missing assignments of course with proved documents for my health condition
What a lovely Module I really enjoyed it.
The good point In this module for each and every new assignment there was something new to learn.
3. What did i not enjoy the most?
I did not enjoy doing my work using poster colours , as I faced an obstacle while doing the exercise of the poster colours , I ruined my designs for 3 times , and the 4th time I handled it finally.
This made me want to watch more tutorials for tips and tricks for using poster colors
4. What have i learnt about myself through this module?
What I have learnt about myself through this module , that im hard worker I faced many struggles throughout this semester but I tried to handle it as much as I can , and Im very keen to produce the best work focusing much on the details maybe its OCD , im very happy with the new learning system as the lecturers conducted from home as im outside the country but I always get the information I needed and the most important thing that lectures are recorded, I was able to refer back to them, Miss Maria was always available to give feedback and always responds very fast.
5. What has changed and what is has not in my learning journey?
The learning system changed from face to face and physical classes and it is very brilliant system as im living with my family and studying at the same time , instead of travelling alone and living alone away from my family and I travel around 16 hours so im glad with the onnline system , sometimes its hard for me due to time zone difference but most of the lecturers consider that and tell me to watch the recorded lectures so no issue .
I learned also through this semester to be less stressed as everything will pass so I don't have to worry much.
But the things that did not change in my learning journey despite what im facing due to my health condition and the obstacles I still have dream and I want to achieve it.
6. What could be improved in this module?
For me I see its perfect and well done , nothing needs to be improved .
First things first, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your patience and guidance thorigh this semester journey. I wouldn't have been able to finish this semeter without your guidance, support and patience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for everything and express my appreciation.
I would like to say Thank you extending for me the submissions its really appreciated.
Lastly, thank you very much for Ms Maria and Ms Jinchi for the entire journey for the semester, Im so happy and honoured that Both of you conducted this module to me I hope it lasts till my graduation and you teach me everything in this major .
