LECTURES

Lectures notes

Week 3 - Repetition, Movement, Hierarchy & Alignment

During this week we learned about four design principles .

Repetition

In very simple way Repetition is repeating a single element many times in a design, it can be used to make a piece of work of the design look active.
The repetition of elements of design creates rhythm and pattern.
For example, you could draw a line horizontally and then draw several others next to it. Repetition can be useful in web and app design.
We can use shapes, colours, textures, fonts, and so on to maintain this consistency via repetition.

Examples of repetition are shown below.

Movement

Movement shows action and creates a feeling of motion within a composition.
Movement is the principle of good design which gives the artist control over what the viewer sees next. Using this principle, the artist can create the path our eyes will travel as we look at a work of art, it's how a design leads the eye in, around, and through a composition.
creates the path the eyes follow For example the eye will travel along an actual path such as solid or dotted line, or it will move along more subtle paths such as from large to smaller elements, from dark to lighter elements and so on
It can be achieved by shapes, forms, lines, and curves as well.

Examples of movement are shown below.

Hierarchy

Hierarchy is the choreography of content in a composition to communicate information and convey meaning.
Visual hierarchy directs viewers to the most important information first, and identifies navigation through secondary content.

“Visual hierarchy controls the delivery of the experience. If you have a hard time figuring out where to look on a page, it’s more than likely that its layout is missing a clear visual hierarchy.”

- The Nielsen Norman Group

Alignment

Alignment is the placement of elements in a way that edges line up along common rows or columns, or their bodies along a common centre so it make the design to be more stable .

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercises: Repetition & Movement

So for this exercise we're required to do two designs, one for repetition and one for movement using water colour or pastels

Repetition

Visual Research

I started off by looking up few inspirations for my design from Pinterest.

Idea Exploration

So I was thinking to draw something from the Pharaonic as Im from Egypt and we have a lot of symbols that represent something so I started to use this in my repetition exercise .
I chose Egyptian Eye of Horus, In ancient Egypt its a symbol representing protection, health, and restoration.

Figure 20 Eye of Horus reference

I started off by drawing Eye Horus, in different sizes and I rotated them with different angles but with the same Eye Horus drawing .
I started the repetition process by repeating the same Eye throughout the A4 paper .
I started by drawing them on tracing paper to trace them after applying the background color.

Figure 21 Eye of Horus drawing

Miss Maria approved on the design and we then moved to the colour scheme , I chose Black and gold and a bit of dark blue colour .
Ms Maria told me to play with the shading as im going to use water colours .
She Approved on the colours shown below ,
Symbol black
And Gold background and to mix with more water .

Then I sent her different shades of colours for background and she chose Yellow Ochre the one in the middle .

After tracing I used water colors to fill up the drawings

Movement

Visual Research

I started off by looking up few inspirations for my design, the design that I had in my mind to draw bird flying .

Idea Exploration

I got inspired by the those 2 images, so i have an idea on drawing instead of the bird to draw a parrot flying I liked the idea of the parrot because I I'm in love with parrots feather colours .

Here's my sketch for the idea

This is my final sketch for my movement design.

Feedback

I really got very beautiful and positive feedback on my work for this exercise from Miss Maria, Her feedback about it "Very nice , Nice work Mariam" and when I asked her if she liked or not or would she like me to add any improvements?

She told me "Yes its good" , "The effect for movement can be seen from the feathers" "Colour combination is good"

Reflection

It was very interesting exercise , as I ruined my clothes and the rug as my mum started yelling at me but it was very happy moment when it comes to combination of colours and the colouring part for both repetition and movement.

While I'm doing the artwork for this exercise , I learned a lot about shades  especially when Miss Maria shared with me many tutorials for shading and water colouring techniques.

But overall everything is done smoothly and successful and I'm really glad with the outcome that I got especially when I recieved the Feedback from Miss Maria, She's very helpful whenever I struggle with anything she's really very helpful by explaining , sharing with me tutorials and inspirations to widen my knowledge.
