Week 4 - Harmony & Unity

Harmony & Unity

During this lecture we have learned about the principle of Harmony, Unity and Proportion.
The principle of harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait.
It can be achieved using colors , shapes and size, I have learned also that Harmony becomes monotony without variety .

Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, , creating a theme.
Unity refers to how different elements of an artwork or design work come together and create a sense of wholeness. It can be achieved through proximity, simplicity, repetition and continuation.

Proportion

Simply it means the relationship of two or more elements in a design , and how they compare with one another, So when correct relationship exists between the elements within the design with of course respect of the size or quantity so harmonious achieved and also the effective/right use of proportion in such a piece of art or design often leads to harmony and unity outcome

Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design. The issue is the relationship between objects, or parts, of a whole. This means that it is necessary to discuss proportion in terms of the context or standard used to determine proportions.

This poster uses proportion. The Ant Man is small while the shield is big, this shows and emphasises on how small the ant man is in comparison to the shield

Exercises: Harmony & Unity

1- We're asked to make 2 designs , one for harmony and one for unity .

Harmony

Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait. Harmony becomes monotony without variety

Idea Exploration

Since harmony can be achieved through the use of
colors , shapes and sizes , I decided to reflect that on my designs .
I made 2 Designs for Harmony .

Figure 6 Harmony, Final Artwork Design 1

Feedback about
design 1

Miss Maria told me , this design has variety and not monotonous.

I decided to do another one for harmony.

Figure 7 Harmony, Final Artwork Design 2

Feedback about design 2

for this artwork can you include some combination of different line thickness.. this also to create dimension of the face.. so it wont look monotonous. Overall its good
You do have some combination of thickness but its not so obvious. It would be great if you can perhaps add some lighter / thinner line

But to be honest I was very afraid if I added anything to ruin the whole design as I repeated this design around 3 times , so I told this to Miss Maria
And she told me " You can maintain like this , its already good "

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures during my process as I was very concentrated and stressed due to the designs that I have ruined so I repeated the process many times.

Unity

Idea Exploration

Unity occurs when elements of design: line, color shape, etc are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
So for the unity design , I started of by doing the design that came on my mind digitally then to sketch it on paper then to colour it.
We're required to use poster colours for this exercise.

Figure 10 The digital outcome

Figure 11 sketching process

I faced a lot of struggles to colour this drawing , I don't know what happened to the paper but I think the colours I have used for this drawing are expired .

Figure 12 process of re colouring for 1st time

Figure 13 process of re colouring for 2nd time

I ruined the design for the 2nd time , because of the colours are not good enough .

Figure 14 process of re colouring for 3rd time

This is me while holding my design that ruined two times , it was very horrible .

So I contact Miss Maria immediately after what happened to my design , so she shared as sample of unity and explained for me further .

Figure 15 example for unity

So I decided to change the colours brand , and the design as well.

Feedback about Unity design

I consulted with Miss Maria regarding my unity design , Much better Mariam this is good.

Reflection

It was quite interesting exercise but difficult at the same time , it consumes a lot of effort and time to come up with those designs , as I ruined the designs many times because I wasn't expert in using poster colors because they're heavier than water colours so they have different techniques.

I watched Youtube tutorials on how to use poster colors.

Using poster colors not very easy , so when I watched tutorials I came up with different tricks and techniques that helped me to make the colours looks way better , the problem that I used wrong proportion of water while mixing the colours , so the colours became transparent .

Overall I enjoyed the experience and Im very happy with the feedback I that I got from The lovely Miss Maria , She always give me a push to produce good art work.
