Week 9 - Type Exploration (18/10/2021)

During this week we supposed to show our idea for Task 3.

For this task, we were asked to create a typeface that would either solve existing issues or experimental in our areas of interest.

So I came out with few ideas and I showed to Mr Vinod Ideas. My ideas to create type face for logos for repairing and fixing cars, Travelling Agency , Doctors eyes test , typeface for blind people , Food brand typeface , Pets store & Buildings advertisements

After showing my ideas to Mr. Vinod, He commented on the ideas the following comments;

For Repairing cars typeface ; you should choose only one logo , You need to design type face for specific problem. Like for example you will find shop in Egypt that typeface not very convenient and you try to work on it to find a solution, You have to design new type face that reflecting the nature of the job with more appropriate type face , So you have to choose specific shop to have some point of reference , choose specific problem and solve this specific problem.

Travelling agency typeface; it has lots of colour you will not able to generate this typeface should be bow, also same problem of choosing different agencies and that will not work , only choose 1 travel agency be specific

Doctors eye test typeface ; already this done before in Malaysia , I didn't know that because here in Egypt doctors use signs . He also mentioned that Signs not helping the reader to read its only to diagnose the problem and already they do use thinking is wrong

Blind typeface ; Theres example already for this idea , so its done in the best way so I think very Difficult to overcome this particular solution

Food brand typeface; It’s good , pls be more specific for specific solution , choose restaurant for example.

Pets typeface ; needs more work not creative ideas decide which specific pets store

Buildings typeface ; tough to be readable and recognisable

He also Advised me with that I have to make decision which one u love to go with.

Then After the feedback I got from Mr Vinod , I understood better so I came up with another 3 Ideas again,

Astrological Symbols Font: A Font based on astrological signs and symbols

That can be easily readable and not very complicated

English letters mixing up with Chinese characteristics : After studying the unique strokes of Chinese calligraphy

I decided to Redesign a font that matches between the

English and Chinese letters , The phycological effect of the alphabets is going to be easier to learn for Chinese. As, there

are a lot of studies stating that, when learning different language with different alphabets is much harder than if the

alphabets are similar. So, what I'm trying to do is to make the English letters looks like the Chinese ones to make it feel similar and easier to be learnt for the Chinese.

Dirran brand: DIRRAN is an organic skin care company , their logo No Recognition of something for skin care & organic

Typeface looks boring

Lack of identity so I decided to Create a typeface that inspired from

Organic thing it can be used later on for organic things , skin or

food

Week 10 - Type Exploration Feedbacks (25/10/2021)

Finally Mr Vinod Liked my ' Dirran Organic ' One .

Basically DIRRAN Is a company that produces organic skin care materials , so I changed the font and took elements from nature , such as leaves and curves that Extracted from plants and I shapes them.

The problems that I found with the Dirran Brand are ?

No Recognition of something for skin care & organic

Typeface looks boring

Lack of identity

Solution ?

Create a typeface that inspired from

Organic thing it can be used later on for organic things , skin or

food

Make it more consistent and more creative

This is the original logo of the company , but I did not feel that expresses the content of the company , which is ORGANIC SKIN PRODUCTS

So I decided to work on the font , I started creating a typeface for DIRRAN

However I found some solutions for the font. I changed the font and took elements from nature , such as leaves and curves that Extracted from plants and I shapes them.

Week 11 - Type Exploration Feedbacks (1/11/2021)

During week 11 , Mr Vinod continued on giving feedbacks for those who needed feedback.

For this week I was on the process of continuing the rest of the numbers and comma , dot , ! & ?

I was still doing some progress.

Week 12 - Type Exploration Feedbacks (8/11/2021)

During this week Mr Vinod checked about the E portfolios and submissions ,

During this week after consultation I got feedback from Mr Vinod regarding my work.

Remove the leaves inside the letters not look good

Make Font BLACK

Letter S - try to come up with different shape , structure needs more working
Letter B - lower part needs to be bigger than upper , remove thin stroke on the left hand side outside the letter , D as well and P
Letter Z - too wide its width different than the other letters
Letters P , B , R more thinner than there rest increase width a little bit more
Need to work on consistency of the width of the all letters

Then I decided to work on the given feedbacks,

So I started to do some progress

I started by removing the leaves from the letters

Then I changed the colour of the font to black as instructed , also I removed the strokes on the left hand side of letters B D P R + Removal of Leaves inside the font

After that I proceeded with the numbers & ? ! , .

Then I realised the consistency of the fonts and numbers not equal or same

So I decided to fix that .

I worked on the consistency.

Then I realised that number 8 & 9 Not the same width , And number 8 very thin between upper part and lower part , also left hand sided from number 9 is so thin.

So I worked more on that.

After having a very detailed look at my font , I Realised that further improvements need to be done to make font look nicer .

This is a picture of the font before doing all of the improvements that mentioned below

Here Some notes I took down by myself for improvising

Letter B - lower part needs to be bigger than upper as the lower part very small not consistent

Letter Z - consistency it turned too thin now the consistency not like the rest of the letters is really became thinner than all the rest we have to make all of them with same consistency

Letter S - changed also edges i think more sharp now not like the same end as rest of the letters ending I fixed that as well also need to be extended from upper and lower part a bit

Letters P , B , R upper part more thinner than the rest so I increase width a little bit more

B , P, R needs more work as the P the upper part is really small

Same goes to R , the lower part is too short and upper part too small like B So I modified that

I feel some letters small letters and other is capitalised like X , Y I felt something wrong with their sizing, a bit small letters

Number 2 as well I worked on it its upper part very long & lower part very small

Number 3 I reflected it I thought it will be better then I didnt like the outcome so I decided to change it again .

Need to work on consistency of the width of the all letters need to be all the same

I feel some letters small letters and other is capitalised (Not same size ) , So I fixed that as well

I changed the comma as well , I felt it needs to be down the line need to be rotated from right hand side a bit

The problem I was very focused during the process I didn't a lot of ss.

FEEDBACK

Week 9 // Type Exploration (18/10/2021)

Mr Vinod Liked my ' Dirran Organic ' One , And he told me to go with it as its the best idea so far

He told me also this is enough for looking about another ideas no much time remaining.

Week 11 // Type Exploration (1/11/2021)

I got no feedback during this week as I was still doing some process so nothing much to show

Week 12 // Type Exploration (8/11/2021)

During this week after consultation I got feedback from Mr Vinod regarding my work.

Week 13 - Type Exploration & Application (15/11/2021)

During this week I got no feedback I just asked for extension as I was in the process but Mr Vinod told me I'm on the right track already.

REFLECTIONS

Week 9

Experience

During this week I thought that I was on the right track but I realised then I need to work more in the ideas and after taking down the notes got from Mr Vinod I decided to work now cause now I was able to continue on the right track .

I consumed a lot of time searching for ideas so for me it was very challenging to come up with good idea

Observation

I observed that I had to do another effort for ideas to show next week

Findings

I found that I couldn't manage my time very well , I consume a lot of effort and time on wrong path so need to work more on that

Week 10

Experience

I proposed my idea for Dirran brand to mr Vinod and he liked it , but I was thinking now how I should do this I was worrying about the next phase,

Observation

Always the beginnings are the hardest part once you master it , everything then moves smoothly , I didn't observe much this week as I was focusing on the work much

Finding

I was worried about how to make all the consistency of the words same , so I watched tutorials and made much effort trying to catch that part , I found that at the begging I wasn't confident at all and I found that I didn't believe in my self

Week 11

Experience

This week was a really interesting week I enjoyed making the font a lot, Its extremely hard and cool

Im very excited to see how the font will look like at the end .

Observation

The time actually chasing me , Time management is so bad I was thinking all the time how I will proceed with this idea .

Finding

I found that out of sudden I wanted to change the idea , I don't know why but maybe because I couldn't think how I will continue with this so I started to do some research and more brain storming till I came with the shape that I fall in love with it , Always we have to remember to believe in ourselves

Week 12

Experience

Actually refining the font took a lot of time , there's a lot of things during this week I had to refine it I discovered a lot of issues with my font

I wrote down notes to myself to follow these steps in order to come-up with best font.

I was thinking what about the people who have to create fonts designers omg it took me a lot of time and effort and tears as well .

Observation

Tiny details and small improvements really matters, for me all the improvements was very detailed but it really at the end it effects the whole look .

Finding

One finding I made I swear this is the toughest assignment ever , but I have learned a lot of things during this process , also time management is really the most important thing that I will manage even in my real life .

Week 13

Experience

OMG toughest week so far , I spent around 2 days no sleep trying to finish and handle everything together without losing anything .

I did a looooooooooooot of trials and errors, I have lost half of my hair because of the stress.

After I exported the font I realised that I had many problems so I have to fix them.

Observation

I observed that no matter hard situation is its doable at the end

Finding : Im so proud of my effort , my font changed from ugly font to beautiful decent font

Im thinking to send it to Dirran brand actually and to show them my idea.

Finding

Finding I found in my self that I have the potential to produce best work but I just need some time , and to manage my time in better way

Week 14

Experience

Here Im , After 14 weeks of stress, time consuming and losing of too much hair and patience

Finally Im now at the LAST week of advanced Typography, I couldn't Believe that I will sleep finally without classes at 3am and 4am to be honest I felt that im a little bit sad that this is gonna finish but im happy at the same time 😆.

Observation

Developing typefaces is really complicated and need a lot of studies and research.

Finding

this module took my patience , energy , hair and also I spent in this module all the time now I'm worrying about the other modules 80% of my time gone to advanced typography

Now im glad that I will finish to focus on the other modules🙈.
