Project 2 - Field Notes
We are required to acquire secondary data for this project by conducting interviews, questionnaires, and surveys. We have the choice of continuing on from project 1, which is the project that we are currently working on. In order to not only be able to experience the culture but also to be able to learn more about it, we need to increase our knowledge through a variety of techniques. We need to gather any physical artifacts that are related to the culture if it is possible to obtain them, and we need to visit places that have the culture involved.

1. Looking for Interviewee

A group call was held prior to the search for interviewees in order to ascertain whether or not all of us would be conforming to the Mexican culture, as we had done in the previous project. We were all able to reach a consensus that we wanted to move forward in spite of the difficulties that we could encounter.

I did not know who I could interview, so I asked my father if he had any friends in his job who were Mexican. Unfortunately, he did not have the contact information for the person of interest; nonetheless, he requested me to get in touch with one of his acquaintances whom I am familiar with in order to determine whether or not she had any friends. The fact that she had a buddy who had just recently arrived from Mexico and that she provided me with his contact information was a stroke of good luck for me.

I got in touch with him, and because he has been residing in Mexico for a few years, I wanted to make sure that I could question him about the culture. Thankfully, he informed me that he is aware of it, but that he will offer his knowledge concerning it through his own personal experience and observation. As a result of this, I have made the decision to inquire about his availability to conduct the interview.

2. Writing down Interview questions

Figure 1.0  Brief Interview questions
(Week 4 - 27/02/2024)

In spite of the fact that I am not very good at coming up with interview questions, I used ChatGPT to guide and assist me in determining what questions I ought to ask. I come up with some questions of my own and some questions with the assistance of ChatGPT. It was extremely helpful, and I have come up with some queries.

For the purpose of making it more clear what we ought to concentrate on, we made the decision to categorize our interview into various subheadings. Additionally, we had already completed our secondary findings during Project 1, which made it much simpler for us to formulate the questions and create the slides. We decided to divide ourselves into groups of three out of six for this project. The first three groups will be responsible for the interview and questions, and the next three groups will be in charge of the slides and visual information.

A rough outline of the interview questions is presented in Figure 1.0; I have only jotted them down in a brief manner in order to ensure that we have a flow. In addition, we made the decision to do this interview in a casual manner, which resulted in a more relaxed and chill atmosphere. We are going to provide Mr. Sathish a copy of our interview questions so that he can review them before we actually do the interview. We want to make sure that he feels comfortable when he is being interviewed.

2. Finalising the questions

(Week 4 - 27/02/2024)

We wrote down a bunch of different questions with different categories, then we cross checked the questions to see which is more important and eliminating the ones which was not as important since we could also easily search the internet for the information. Once we were done, we sent the interview questions to the interviewee.

3. Conducting Zoom Call/ Audio Call

4. Receiving pictures from the Day Of The Dead

During the course of the conversation, he presented us with a photograph that he had taken on the day of the dead, and he also provided us with information regarding the altar and the offerings. The fact that he was ready to share some of his memories and artifacts with us along with the photographs that he had taken was a very interesting aspect of the experience.

REFLECTION

Observation

Due to the fact that each and every one of us put in a lot of effort to investigate the topic, we have come to the conclusion that we have a comprehensive understanding of the Mexican culture. As a result, we have made the decision to continue with Project 1's Mexican Culture. When I first started working on this assignment, I had a lot of concerns about one thing, and that was how we were going to acquire knowledge about the culture of Mexico, given that we have no touch with any Mexican people. Nevertheless, despite the fact that we were aware that this could be a problem for us, we still desired to move forward. As a group, we are confident that we will prevail over this challenge in some manner, shape, or form. We were aware that we were going for the Mexican culture from the very beginning, and as a result, we made the decision to move on.

Experiences

I asked my father if he knew any Mexican friends, and he told me that there was one person from his workplace who was interested in interviewing the Mexican culture. I was very excited because I thought this wouldn't be a challenge, but he told me that he had already left. This was one of the most significant challenges we faced. We did not know anyone who was Mexican. Neither he nor his contact had the same information. My father had requested that I inquire with another friend of his who is someone I am close to. Thankfully, when I did so, I discovered that there was a friend of hers who had recently returned from Mexico and had been residing there for five years.

When I told the team about this, we all agreed to conduct an interview with him because he has been in Mexico before, and five years is a pretty long time. We thought that we could interview him based on his personal experiences, and I found that to be very amazing because not only can we get insights on the culture of Mexico, but we can also get his experiences of living there. I couldn't contain my excitement, and we used Chat GPT to generate some questions for us to consider. We were able to obtain additional information on the Mexican, and his personal experiences are quite intriguing to learn about. The interview went pretty well, and we received a lot of information. Living in Mexico for five years and having the opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture of that country is truly remarkable. This adventure is something that I am very thankful to be a part of. During the Zoom call, the only difficulty we had was that the connection on the interviewee's end was not exceptionally strong. As a result, several parts of the call were sluggish, and we were unable to hear very well.

We planned another chat on Whatsapp and voice recorded it in order to avoid any misunderstandings. However, we ended up running into another problem, which was that there was no audio, but the material was still quite fresh in our thoughts. Consequently, we jotted down as much information as we could. As an additional measure to guarantee that we have the correct information, we provided the interviewee with access to the responses to the questions in order to check whether or not we have recorded the correct information. for the purpose of ensuring that we do not overlook any vital information.

Findings

Being able to chat to someone about different cultures and exchange tales about their own experiences is simply incredibly eye-opening to me, and it's fascinating to see how different cultures see certain ideas in a different way. Overall, I found this to be a very pleasant experience. Everything that I have been through up to this point has been nothing but very knowledgeable, and it is not something that can be purchased. However, as a result of this, I have actually learnt a great deal more than I ever could have imagined I could have accomplished. The entire process was enjoyable to me, and I found it to be really wholesome. There were portions that were entertaining, and there were sections that were tough. Overall, however, it has been an incredible adventure up to this point.  The fact that I was able to experience and see/listen about the many stories is something for which I am really grateful. It has inspired me to visit the culture of Mexico at some point in the future, and it will be a great blessing for me to know that I have some knowledge that I can share with the people who are within my immediate vicinity.

Ivan Lam
( Create Art for the blind )

Figure 1.0 Blindsight
(29/02/2024)

Lam remarked that he would never set out to produce interactive work but rather wanted to translate his mental processes. The objective was for Lam to create art that was accessible and inclusive for everyone to enjoy. Because of this, he incorporates elements that may be felt into his artwork. As a result of Lam's desire to have a deeper comprehension of the blind, he began working with MAB. Despite the difficulties they had to encounter in order to survive in the modern world, he noted that their positive attitude was contagious. He also mentioned that in order to be successful, they would have to work ten times harder than people who are not blind (Chin, 2023).

Figure 1.1 Braille
(Week 4 - 29/02/2024)

Together, MAB and Lam had produced nine works of art that were mostly based on the concept of braille. The braille inscriptions that are placed into each painting provide information on the color that was utilized for the artwork. This allows for a comparison of a spectrum of colors. As an illustration, the braille version of the color Austere Yellow might read as follows: the color is cheery, warm, and brilliant. The color yellow, which has a flavor similar to lemon chiffon and hues similar to austere yellow, is like a string of pleasant experiences on a joyful day.

Lam stated that the purpose of his exhibition was not to duplicate the experiences of blindness but rather to provide blind people with the opportunity to feel seen and acknowledged (Chin, 2023).
