When I finally get to the end of the module, I can't believe I've made it this far. It has been a difficult road with lots of ups and downs that have pushed me to my limits. When I think back on this subject as a whole, the best way to describe it is as a rollercoaster ride. The jobs I was given were by no means easy, but I'm glad I had the chance to do them, and am happy with how they turned out. Come with me as I think about how this changed me.
When I started the programme, I didn't have any particular goals in mind. I didn't know that I was about to go on a trip that would be full of work. The amount of work I had to do quickly became too much, and I wished I had been better prepared. Every job seemed to take longer and take more work than I had expected. I felt like I was always trying to catch up and keep up with what the programme asked of me. I learned then how important it is to keep track of time and how important it is to be able to change quickly when things change.
During this module, there were times when I didn't know what to do or how to do it. During these times, I was on my own and had to use my problem-solving skills and ability to make do with what I had. Even though it was hard to deal with these changes, they turned out to be great chances for growth. I learned to trust my gut, try different things, and keep going even when it wasn't clear what to do next. Getting past these problems made me feel good about myself and gave me more confidence in my skills.
One of the jobs, the second task, stands out from the rest. For this job, I had to draw on my artistic side and make a lot of illustrations in a short amount of time. Surprisingly, I was able to do better than I thought I could. It was exciting to see my creativity come out, especially since I hadn't tried to draw properly in over six months. This job helped me remember that stepping out of my comfort zone can help me find hidden talents and passions. It was a time when I learned more about myself and found my artistic spirit again.
The most important thing about this module may have been how it got me out of my comfort zone. The endless challenges and hard work made me face my limits and try to go beyond them. I had to accept pain and the unknown in order to grow as a person. Each obstacle gave me a chance to improve my skills, learn new things, and get stronger. The programme taught me that it's important to be open to the unknown, because it's often where you can grow the most.
Observation
I'd argue using your eyes is the best approach to learn how to make fascinating layouts. I had no concept what publishing design was before this semester because I thought it would be quite similar to the design of books or newspapers. Thank goodness I was wrong! There are countless options for what you can achieve within the constraints you are given, so it is much more than that. I would say that at first I struggled with the edgy feel because I have always done safe things, but as I used different techniques to study how others did theirs on Pinterest or Behance, I was able to try and branch out of my comfort zone which I so much wanted to learn to do.
Findings
I was able to learn about the various methods that layouts may be done during this module. There are countless ways the outcome can be achieved, even with a straightforward grid design. Regarding how to consistently create diversity for the styles I committed to, I was originally dubious. When I got stuck, Mr. Vinod's Form & Movement exercise was a lifesaver, especially when I was creating the Brand Guideline and my layout was heavily reliant on leveraging the columns to maximise my available space.
